Food Forest - A New Programme at Food & Trees For Africa
This month Food & Trees for Africa broke ground on our first food forest.
A pilot which will be replicated across the country in years to come.
Letsema-Illima Primary School in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, was selected as the beneficiary for this first project.
We embarked on the project on the 9th of March, planting indigenous shade and fruit trees, sponsored by DAFF.
We will be returning to the project on a monthly basis, as we gradually establish the forest, which, in 3 years will produce a constant supply of food to the school and the local community.
“Food Forests are a key component of permaculture design, and ensure a reliable, perennial supply of food with minimal maintenance,” says Emily Jones, Trees and Carbon Manager at FTFA.
“It’s remarkable to partner with beneficiaries and government to establish FTFA’s first such project. We’re excited to see how these food forests evolve in urban and peri-urban environments.”.....
