I love doing what I've been doing in the Nursery and Landscaping Industry for 40 odd years.
SANA even awarded me with a Gold medal and Honorary Membership in 2010 for my contribution to the Nursery Industry
Unfortunately I lost everything in 2008, so had to start all over again in my sixties! Yes, I am seventy-one years young in July!
I take full responsibility for the choices I made during that awful time in my life. I can't blame others, or the economy, or the government, or the banks or make any other excuse.
After all, aren't all our circumstances a direct result of choices that we have made in the past?
But, I learned many lessons, which I have adapted to my new (only 3 year old) little business.
No more will I spend more than I make. No more overdrafts, loans or credit (giving or getting) to have all the shiny toys of so called success. I have all the toys I need for a good life, thank you. And all paid for!
No more owning trucks, bakkies, cars etc (all bought with Credit). Now I use courier services to do deliveries. They have to carry the cost of vehicles, maintenance, drivers etc., etc. My seventeen year old Merc C240 (365,000Km) still serves me very well.
As my customers pay before delivery, I pay my suppliers up front. That way nobody has to chase anybody for payment. No need for Credit Control.
I don't have to rent a warehouse or office space either. From Enquiries to Invoices, Orders to Suppliers, arranging stock and deliveries.
All done by e-mail from my laptop or cellphone.
That way, I can also keep my overheads under control, so I can work on smaller margins.
Isn't technology wonderful?
I will continue on this path for as long as I am able.
My thanks to all my customers and suppliers for their fantastic support so far.
